Ice cube trays save time and money!

Today, I'm participating for the first time in Kitchen Tip Tuesday at Tammy's Recipes. One of my favorite (and cheapest!) kitchen items is the humble ice cube tray.

I picked up these bad boys for $1.00 for the three of them at Dollar General. Truth be told, they seem to perform better than the more expensive ones I use for ice! I have these specific trays set aside for food use, so my water doesn't end up tasting like chicken or something. You can freeze all kinds of things in ice cube trays, and then just pop the cubes into a freezer bag once they're solid.

Here, I have homemade chicken stock, cilantro, parsley, and fresh tomato juice. (I haven't quite figured out what to do with the tomato juice yet--any ideas?)

It saves time, because all I have to do is just pull one of these out of the bag and just throw it in the pot--I don't even take the time to thaw it. For the herbs, I just chop them or toss them in the food processor, and pour a little water in the tray with them. Definitely cuts down on my meal prep time! And it saves money, because I'm throwing out less food. When these fresh herbs were starting to go bad, that's when I chopped and froze them. I made the chicken stock from the chicken we were eating anyway--I squeezed everything I could out of that little chicken! And the tomatoes were from a friend's garden. I froze the tomato "meat" as well, to use in spaghetti sauce, and figured I might as well save the juice for something. I've also heard that wine does really well with this method, for adding to sauces and such. Really the possibilities are endless! I'd love to hear if you have any other ideas!

Hmm, maybe you could use the tomato juice in sauces and such that need to be thinned out a little. I use ice trays too... Whenever I whip up a batch of homemade pizza sauce, I pop the extra into trays and freeze for later uses

Thanks for participating! :D

I think the tomato juice would be perfect to add into chili, vegetable soup, etc.! :)

Thanks for leaving a comment on Natural On A Budget. It is fun to see where other people are in their journeys. Don't be afraid of soaking grains. It is really easy. The hardest part is remembering to do it ahead of time. I have not tried spouting things yet.
